Be Ready and Alert!

In our gospel Jesus says, “Sell your possessions and give alms.”  “Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning.”  “Be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.”  Peter was concerned if these sayings apply to everyone or not.  Jesus gives no direct reply to him but implies that we should ask whether they strike home to us personally.  Not everyone is called to sell everything.  But we should never be attached to this world’s goods.  Not everyone can visit with their legislators and Congressional representative.  But we all should be informed on the issues and participate in the political process.  We can’t know everything about our faith.  But we ought to be pursuing life-long learning of our faith.  All of us can heed the call of the Pope to practice mercy toward our neighbor in some way and fight against a “culture of indifference”.

What is it that I must do to be more alert to the day of the Lord that has already come and will come in its fullest, completed state?  Perhaps the first question is, What must I cast aside so that I can live with this alertness?  The Lord will truly help us to discern these questions so that we can be ready and alert to follow him in new, adventurous and trusting ways.
